When should you pack your hospital bag?
Most midwives recommend starting to gather your hospital bag items between weeks 32 and 34 of pregnancy (around 7.5 months). The goal is to have your bag ready and accessible by week 36, since labor can start earlier than expected.
Packing your bag early also helps you avoid forgetting anything and allows you to enjoy the last few weeks with peace of mind. Feel free to split your things into two bags: a small bag for the delivery room (what you'll need during labor) and a larger bag with items for the hospital stay.
Essentials you don't want to forget
Here are the 5 items most commonly forgotten by expecting moms -- and always regretted:
- Phone charger -- essential for contacting loved ones, taking the first photos, and passing the time during waiting periods.
- Facial mist spray -- the delivery room is often warm and labor is exhausting. A facial mist provides instant relief.
- Energy snacks -- labor can last hours. Granola bars, dried fruit, or chocolate will give you a boost between contractions.
- Nipple cream -- if you're breastfeeding, the first few days can be painful. A pure lanolin cream protects and repairs.
- Clothes in 0-3 month size -- some babies are born too big for newborn size. Always pack a few bodysuits and sleepers in 0-3 months just in case.
Hospital bag for the partner
The partner also needs to pack a small bag to be comfortable during the hospital stay. Here are the essentials:
- Change of clothes -- one or two t-shirts, comfortable pants, underwear.
- Toiletry bag -- toothbrush, deodorant, and something to freshen up.
- Snacks and drinks -- for the long hours of waiting during labor.
- Phone charger and power bank -- to stay in touch with family and capture the first moments.
- Pillow or blanket -- hospital couches aren't the most comfortable.
- Change for vending machines -- always handy in a hospital setting.
- Photo ID and family booklet -- needed for the birth registration.
